Paschimottanasana (Seated Forward Bend) is a foundational yoga pose that deeply stretches the entire backside of the body from the heels to the neck. It is celebrated for lengthening the spine, stretching the hamstrings, and calming the nervous system. How to Perform the Pose Start in Dandasana: Sit on the floor with your legs straight out in front of you. Flex your feet actively, pressing your heels away. Lengthen: Inhale, sit up tall, and reach both arms straight up toward the ceiling to lengthen your spine. Hinge at the Hips: Exhale and hinge forward from your hip creases—not your waist. Keep your spine long.Reach: Place your hands on your legs, ankles, or feet (wherever they comfortably reach without forcing a rounded back). Fold: On every inhale, lengthen your chest forward. On every exhale, fold a little deeper, moving your navel toward your thighs. Hold: Relax your shoulders and hold the pose for 30 to 60 seconds (or up to 1-3 minutes) while breathing deeply.
Improves Flexibility: Deeply stretches the hamstrings, calves, and the entire length of the spine. Relieves Back Pain: By stretching the erector spinae and releasing tension in the lower back, it helps alleviate chronic stiffness. Manages Weight: Consistent practice can help burn excess belly fat and tone the abdominal region. Reduces Stress: Calms the brain and central nervous system by encouraging a harmonized flow of energy. Pelvic Circulation: Enhances blood flow to the reproductive organs, which is noted in yoga traditions to help alleviate menstrual cramps and menopausal symptoms.
